I have a dream.
USAの黒人は、リンカーンの奴隷解放令で奴隷身分からは解放されたが、後もいたるところで人種差別を受けていた。学校など公共施設は別々であった。
1955年アラバマ州モンゴメリーの町で、黒人女性がバスの中の「白人席」に座っていて白人に席を譲らなかったため、運転手からの通報を受けてやって来た警察に逮捕される、という事件が起きた。このとき、地元の教会にいたキング牧師が指導者となって黒人たちによる「バス・ボイコット運動」を行い成功させた。
この黒人の差別撤廃、市民権獲得運動の高揚の上に、1963年リンカーンが奴隷解放をして100年後、「ワシントン大行進」で10万人が集まった。ワシントンD.C.のそのリンカーン記念堂の前でキング牧師は“I have a dream”.という差別のない日の来る夢を名演説で語ったのであった。
